Pearl Harbor Survivor Victim of Elder Abuse

Milagros Angeles, 63, was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse in El Cajon. Angeles was the caretaker of a Pearl Harbor survivor and allowed him to live in a house filled with filth and did not provide him with proper care.

According to the LA Times, once officers arrived at the home they found the 93 year old Pearl Harbor survivor, who suffers from dementia, sitting at a table clutching an old picture of the Vestal ship that he was serving on the day of the Japanese attack.

The elderly man was found dirty, disoriented and dehydrated and was taken to the local Veterans Affairs hospital. Although the veteran did have relatives in Southern California, they were not aware of his living situation. Sgt. Mark Varnau from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has said "We tell people they should check on their kids. They should check on their parents too".

Fair Oaks Home Closed, Abuse Caught on Tape

A residential care home facility in Fair Oaks is shut down by the state of California after a "granny cam" captures elder abuse.

The Sacramento Bee states that Sean Suh installed a camera next to his grandmother Kyong Hui Duncan's bed to make sure that the staff treated her right. Suh noticed that his grandmother was suffering from unexplained gashes and bruises, and seem to be drugged when he visited; he found a new home to transfer his grandmother to, however, was informed that she had passed away.

Shortly after Duncan's death, Suh went through the camera's footage and found a clip that showed a staffer violently shaking Duncan in her wheelchair. Duncan's family filed a civil lawsuit charging the home with abuse, neglect and wrongful death.

Following the investigation, the state ordered the home to cease operation. On top of this, the state has accused the Fair Oaks home of "fire code violations, failing to dispose of contaminated needles, using prescription medicines that had expired and forging prescriptions". Three OC Nursing Homes See Boost from Medicare

The New Year might be bringing some cheer to three Orange County nursing homes. According to the Orange County Business Journal, Medicare will be issuing a reimbursement program to nursing homes because of a "favorable reimbursement environment..." These nursing homes located in Irvine, Foothill Ranch and Mission Viejo will be able to treat patients whose reimbursements were previously inadequate. Even though California is having budget problems, Medicare will pay nursing homes per patient day depending on what treatments patients receive. This payment boost will greatly benefit these nursing homes as well as encourage other facilities to provide their patients with extra care.
