« Fall at Nursing Home Leads Elder Woman to Hospital | Main | Woman Arrested for Financial Elder Abuse of 100 Year Old Grandmother »

3 Adults Charged with Elder Abuse

Elder abuse can occur in several ways including physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, neglect and even financial abuse. The most recent story involved an 85-year-old woman, originally from Los Angeles, who was found alone in a small cabin in Maine.

According to WLBZ, the elderly woman was taken from her California home a year and a half ago by three individuals who befriended her and eventually gained control of her assets. Barbara Davis, Nicholas Davis and Jonathan Stevens have all been arrested and charged with elder abuse and endangering the welfare of a dependent person which is a Class C felony. The three befriended the elderly woman, became her caregivers and convinced the woman to trust them. Officers have discovered that the three claimed to take care of the woman, liquidated her assets and set up a trust at the woman's request.

Fall at Nursing Home Leads Elder Woman to Hospital

An 87-year-old woman has fallen victim of elder abuse after the nursing home that she resided in failed to provide her with the proper care and attention.

According to WKRN, Pauline Holt was taken to the local hospital after she fell at the Life Care Center of Columbia earlier this month. Unfortunately, this was not the first time that the elderly woman had fallen while she was supposed to be under supervision. Holt's daughter told reporters that since her mother has lived at the facility, she has fallen 10 times.

Nursing home care givers are supposed to provide their residents with the medical care and attention that each resident needs. This includes making sure that the resident's living quarters are clutter-free, that the resident is taken care of if they become wet or provide additional assistance when moving to and from their bed.

22-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Elder Abuse

Cesar Ulloa, 22, has been convicted of elder abuse and will serve 6 years in prison for elder abuse and life behind bars for torture.

According to the Daily News, the Reseda man, who was 19 at the time of the abuse, worked at the Silverado Senior Living retirement home in Calabasas where he abused three elderly residents as well as tortured an elderly man.

Prosecutors stated that Ulloa body-slammed a 78-year-old mute woman, launched himself from a dresser onto the stomach of an elderly man and taunted a resident, saying that he was "sexing his daughter". Once the body of 80-year-old Elmore Kittower was exhumed, it was determined that the elderly man had been tortured for months before he died.

Woman Beat Grandmother, Charged With Elder Abuse

A Murrieta woman is scheduled to be sentenced today for causing elder abuse to her 94-year-old grandmother two years ago.

On September 3, 2008 April Courtney, 36, broke into her elderly grandmothers house, stole the woman's aluminum cane and began beating her with it over 20 times in the head and body. According to My Valley News, the grandmother fell down and pretended to be unconscious so her granddaughter would stop beating her.

Courtney came into the house and stole documents that could be used to prosecute her in a previous financial elder abuse case where she allegedly withdrew $28,000 from her grandmother's account without her consent. Courtney is scheduled to be sentenced today for the burglary and elder abuse.

Irvine Man Arrested for Financial Elder Abuse

A 45-year-old Irvine man has been arrested for financial elder abuse, grand theft and suspicion of burglary after scamming several seniors.

According to the OC Register, Michael Edward Ragsdale scammed elder residents when he promised to install walk-in fiberglass tubs or showers that are designed for the elderly or disabled which often cost around $7,500. Not only did Ragsdale fail to show up to install the tubs, he did not return any deposits and kept money that was paid up front. On top of this, last year Ragsdale was accused of stealing $2,000 from a partially blind elderly woman by using her credit card without her authorization.

Ragsdale is currently being held on a $100,000 bail; if he chooses to make bail, he will be required to show proof that the money comes from a legal and legitimate source. If convicted, Ragsdale could be facing five felony charges.
