Man Accused of Elder Abuse on Trial
A Virginia man will be facing trial for accusations of elder abuse and neglect of his 86-year-old mother that eventually lead to her death.
According to an article on the Richmond Times Dispatch, 57-year-old Richard Lee Wallace was responsible for the care of his elderly mother, Elsie Wallace. Wallace had lived with his mother for the majority of his adult life and began taking care of her finances in 2008. Two years later, the elderly woman, who had Alzheimer's, had lost the ability to walk and relied solely on her son for care and assistance. The last few months of the elderly woman's life were spent on a torn-up couch in the home, which is exactly where officers found her body when they were dispatched to the home.
Upon arrival, officers found the elderly woman, who had been deceased for no longer than an hour, covered in flies with bedsores that were filled with maggots. Upon further investigation, the cause of death was the direct result of a bacterial infection in the blood caused by gangrene. Wallace's elder abuse trial is currently underway and expected to come to a close this week.
