A residential care home facility in Fair Oaks is shut down by the state of California after a "granny cam" captures elder abuse.
The Sacramento Bee states that Sean Suh installed a camera next to his grandmother Kyong Hui Duncan's bed to make sure that the staff treated her right. Suh noticed that his grandmother was suffering from unexplained gashes and bruises, and seem to be drugged when he visited; he found a new home to transfer his grandmother to, however, was informed that she had passed away.
Shortly after Duncan's death, Suh went through the camera's footage and found a clip that showed a staffer violently shaking Duncan in her wheelchair. Duncan's family filed a civil lawsuit charging the home with abuse, neglect and wrongful death.
Following the investigation, the state ordered the home to cease operation. On top of this, the state has accused the Fair Oaks home of "fire code violations, failing to dispose of contaminated needles, using prescription medicines that had expired and forging prescriptions". The Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, California was fined early last week for failing to prevent a 91-year-old woman from falling.
